The Sheep
Our farm is a haven for misfits. Our sheep meet those standards perfectly. In 2018 we found a small flock of sheep who needed a new home. They ranged in age from elderly to a small newborn bottle fed baby. They were a mix of Jacobs and Suffolk sheep and were being housed on a pasture that no longer supported their nutrition with an owner who no longer had an interest in caring for them. We brought bottle baby home to begin her round the clock feedings and quickly began clearing a pasture. Over the next couple of months, we created a 3 acre fenced pasture and the sheep have been living out their best lives here ever since.
The Poultry
The poultry has been an ever evolving experiment. We bought our first chickens in 2011 at our first house on a tiny little 1/4 acre lot in a small town. We began our flock with 5 chickens. Over the years, we’ve had as many as 20 chickens living in the sweet little coop that David built for me in 2011. They’re a mix of a variety of heritage breed chickens and cross bred babies that include varieties like Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, Barred Rock, Australorp and Americaunas. The Ducks came to live with us in 2021. We started with 8 Cayuga Ducks that quickly became a mishmash of breeds that we’ve rescued over the years.
The Cats
We currently have 3 cats. All of them have been rescue cats that showed up in one way or another, managing their way into our home via their adorable faces and terrible behavior. The cats run the show (just ask them). Diddy is our oldest cat. She’s a cat that came home with us from the animal shelter when I made the ill fated decision to stop by with our two daughters 11 years ago. Mulvina was a skinny female white stray that showed up in our yard unexpectedly and never left. Aurthur is a male long haired gray cat that we found in a trash bin at my father’s house after he died in 2019.
The Dogs
The dogs are a pack that currently consists of our two female Irish Wolfhhounds and our Male Golden Retriever. The Wolfhounds run the show (just ask them) and have been part of our family since 2020. The largest of the two hounds is Arowyn. Maeve is the smaller of the two but makes up for what she lacks in stature with a larger than life personality that isn’t for the meek. Rowen, our golden retriever, is a bit of a rescue case who suffers from extreme anxiety, a fear of almost everything on the planet and a litany of behavior issues.
